"But the Kindle is a toy for content consumption, surfing, reading. Gaming and drawing for the kids."

Agree with this largely for my iPad as well. iPad is still a luxury device. It's a toy that performs 97% of the functions I once used my home PC for. It isn't going to replace my work computer anytime soon, though. Incidentally, the remaining 3% percent of my home computing needs requires Turbo Tax. Get TurboTax running on a Surface RT (even instead of Office), and they might have a sale :).

"This different and new market for the 7" iPad mini is completely imaginary."

Agreed. I don't see it as a brand new market either, just another option for the existing market. The Mini is for the person who wants an iPad but prefers the small form factor. Maybe some of those people bought Nexus 7's, who knows. The Mini does very little for the person who wants an iPad but can't afford it.

That said, there are multiple reviews out today that indicate a preference for the mini over the larger iPad. So in a way, keeping the gross margin roughly the same as Apple did makes it a win-win.
