Great Review. Very neutral.

Couple of things: They are reviewing a surface with a keyboard and an iPad without. Also thats an iPad3 not the latest.

Like I said before I think Microsoft is going to sell a lot of Surface...s, awkward name. Mostly to windows geeks who now have a decent choice. I would say the majority of sales they steal are going to be at the expense of the Android ecosystem. In fact I think the Nokia Microsoft phones are also going to steal a lot of thunder.

For Apple people - I think they will stay with the iPad mostly. Big ecosystem. The iPad has its own advantages.

Surface PROs
keyboard - very nice - I think Apple will respond
compatible phone available
usb
memory cards

ANTI
windows - viruses -
currently weak OS is half assed - my guess is they'll bone customers on the upgrade
its microsoft - poor support likely

iPad PROs
ecology -
virus free - iOS robust
better chips and screens
compatible phones

ANTI
usb
memory cards
keyboard not integrated

I think the surface is a great first product from Microsoft. Maybe Ballmer is not so bad after all. Maybe he learned his lesson. Now if they could only do something with the tech underlying windows. Hopefully this will spur apple on to even better products. The surface certainly resembles the Mac Air at cheaper price, although woefully underpowered and half assed but I don't think that will matter particularly as low power chips advance. And the keyboard is great.

Surface vs. iPad - YouTube

A side by side Surface to iPad comparison, Microsoft not involved.

Why do these things not work?

SlashGear Reviews Microsoft Surface against the Apple iPad 3
Not exactly a knockout for the Surface, is it? In fact, it looks like a victory for the iPad 3, on points.

However, I realize that for some people, including yourself, evidently, the ability to run MS Office is of prime importance.
