I am going to be very unpopular in this board for saying this, but here goes:

We were beat, on social issues, on perception and with turnout and precinct level politics.

It should have been about the economy - period. We might have thrown stones on FP and painted the other side as extreme on social issues, but we will not win with the younger generation acting like angry (old) white people.

I am Roman Catholic and I actually believe in the sanctity of life. That means no on the death penalty, abortion and euthanasia. But my religion is not the law of the land and I cannot presume to foist my religious beliefs on others.

In the VP debate - imagine how it would have been perceived differently if when asked about abortion - Paul Ryan had pulled a Bill Clinton - and explained that despite his personal views - abortion should be safe, legal and rare. He could go on to describe adopting a European model where 3rd trimester abortions are illegal except in cases reviewed by a medical panel. Then he would also explain his opposition to the Death Penalty, but that since it is the law - and that in the unlikely event that he became President he would appoint a legal council to review clemency requests (so his personal beliefs would not influence the decision) and that he would abide by their recommendations and the law. This would subtly point out the hypocrisy of the left (being pro-abortion and anti-death penalty).

My daughters started out loving Paul Ryan, but the older two were totally turned off by the way the abortion discussion came off. Some of their friends were turned off enough to change their votes.

The Dems moved the messaging to Social issues and it worked.

On immigration Romney should have channeled George Bush and discussed a plan for comprehensive immigration reform. To the far right - say - yes we will finish the fence - good fences make for good neighbors. However - today we come off looking to hispanics like the WASP's looked to our irish, Italian and other waves of european ancestors.

Promote conservative values - do not mandate them. Hispanic, Indian and Oriental immigrants are at their heart socially conservative. They should be in our camp if we would only welcome them.
