And how much energy do we waste when we shut down electronics that don't really shut down completely ?
The worst offenders in this regard at our house are the two 30" Apple LCD monitors. Turn them off, yet their power bricks still stay warm, sucking up juice like crazy. Ugh. For that reason, at night I turn them off at the power strip, and dream about how I'm going to spend the tons of money I saved. :-)

Which is why if you're having a problem with your computer, the best thing to do is to shut down and pull the plug and wait a minute before starting up again.

I've found some problems that would not go away unless that was done.

That's an interesting point. I recall a PC virus years ago that would hide in the video card of the PC, so it was undetectable and wouldn't be killed on a soft reboot, even after antivirus software had been run. You had to shut it down completely in order to get rid of it.

Ingenious and nasty.
