As I recall, he made very similar comments at the second debate between the republican contenders...and it really fell flat, that was one of the few debates I watched, and the moderator was very respectful to Ron Paul, and gave him a couple of large blocks of time to explain his view...and it was just like his rambling final essay...the only point he made clearly was that he believes we should operate our govt applying the the golden rule...which is nice, but hardly a coherent policy statement. All I could think at the time was 'is that all?' I think a lot of other people felt the same way, as his support quickly evaporated after that debate. I was definitely sympathetic to him, but after that, I have to say, I was very dissappointed...I was looking for him to be much more articulate and 'radical', in establishing the intellectual foundations for life, liberty and property.

Envy is wanting other people's stuff. Seeing somebody else with something and wanting it, feeling bad about not having it. When you combine envy with government force, you have tax and redistribution. When people vote to boss other people around and take their money, that's envy.

It seems simple, obvious and straightforward to me.

Doctors for example, want other people's stuff. So they form a cartel to stop people getting medicines cheaply; for your own safety of course. It's illegal to get medicine or medical treatment unless you buy it from the cartel. Then, when you go to them, they give you a bill big enough to take all your money.

Lawyers operate a cartel too. They establish a vast array of arcane rules which keep the cash flowing.

Bankers have their own gold mine, with shovel-ready money at the ready. When my business goes bust, I don't get a tarp, or General Motors rescue. If I make stupid loans, I lose my money.

Government "workers" have the best monopoly. They have guns to enforce it. If you tell the government you have decided not to give them your money this year, they will send around a SWAT team to take it. There are swarming hordes of government workers now. Michael Mann for example. Al Gore is getting a good pension.

If you can't see envy, perhaps it's because it isn't an object. Try not paying your taxes and see if you can find any envy. The seven cardinal sins are rampant. Virtuous Victorian Values are a joke. See how people scoff at the idea. Don't be misled by religion. The priests hijack those moral issues to dress up their superstitions in temporal garb. Morality has nothing to do with religion. Religion is believing what somebody else tells you about supernatural magic.

If you are looking for envy, try leaving your wallet on the footpath with your name address and phone number in it, with lots of banknotes. Try leaving a nice car with the windows down and the keys in the ignition. Sometimes people will return your wallet and leave the car alone. Let me know how it goes. I bet you can find envy.
