Hi tejek; The Republicans fought against social security. Now they're big defenders. I presume they fought other expansions of government power that they now accept. The same will happen with Obamacare.

Eventually the fiscal conservative / small government (tea party) portion of the Republican party will die off and they'll start putting up candidates like the popular Republican governor of New Mexico (blue state). She's in the news lately for saying that Romney is digging the hole deeper by talking about gifts.

The other way of describing "gift" is to say that the government "cares" and will "help". These words all mean the same thing. Susana Martinez is in favor of big government but is a social conservative. This is the other half of the Republican party. When the Republicans put candidates like her up, they will split off the social conservatives from the Democrat party.

This country is nowhere near going to a one-party control. It wasn't close to it back during Reagan or Roosevelt's land slides. The two parties will continue to compete over the "independent" voters and the voters who have desires in both camps.

In bad economic times, the economic problems of the people become important and they naturally vote Democratic. And in good times they worry less about the economy and vote culture war. And in this the Republicans have a big advantage. For example, 86% of the US public believes that abortion should be illegal in the 3rd trimester (i.e. after 6 months).
