It wasn't close to it back during Reagan or Roosevelt's land slides. The two parties will continue to compete over the "independent" voters and the voters who have desires in both camps. In bad economic times, the economic problems of the people become important and they naturally vote Democratic. And in good times they worry less about the economy and vote culture war. And in this the Republicans have a big advantage. For example, 86% of the US public believes that abortion should be illegal in the 3rd trimester (i.e. after 6 months). Some of what you say makes sense esp the part about one party control. However, you are missing the third leg of the stool.......demographics. The demographics in this country have changed significantly during the past 30 years. The Dems have been actively recruiting the people making up that change; the Rs have not. Even before the video clip of Romney and the 47%, people were surprised at how open Rs were about their politics; their perceptions of women and non whites........which consists of an underlay of misogyny and racism. Not saying all Rs think that way but enough do so that there have been numerous public gaffes and missteps re. these two subjects during the past 4 years. In fact, many people, especially young people, are surprised at how far back from the mainstream Rs are. Coupled that with the debunking of some R myths...........like trickle down....and the R platform is on pretty shaky ground. There needs to be a significant revamping of the party........some thing I have been saying for several years.......if it wants to compete more effectively in national politics. Using gerrymandering as its most effective tool for winning isn't going to work going forward. Dems will recapture the state legislatures and re gerrymander districts so they go Dem.........and that will allow them to recapture the House. However, the GOP seems incapable of sustained introspection and self criticism...........which is the beginning step to renewal. Instead, they are looking to place the blame on someone or something else; to whit, Romney, Rove and Morris are under some serious attack as are the 'gifts' Obama offered to women and the middle class. Renewal takes considerable work. I am not sure the GOP is up to the task.
