My mom told me how the elite were the only ones able to afford white bread in the old days. The poor had to eat whole grain black bread. But the whole grain is where the vitamins are and so the poor faired better than the rich who developed vitamin deficiency. <<Oh yes! Mayo sandwiches on Wonder Bread!!! LOL...memories... The texture of WB bothered me for some reason. At one point, mom began quoting/obsessing about some study(mind you she spoke and read "broken english") that mice starved to death when placed on a WB diet.....I think it was one of her scare tactics...this went on for years...you can't make this up! I went with the Italian Bread with ham and cheese...yummm. And with a bowl of her chicken soup. Heaven.
