You are right, but when we embark on Socialism, then what we have is an evolution from Free Markets/Democracy to Socialism/Centrally Planned Economies, and then eventually, to Totalitarianism/Dictatorship. Where you are on that spectrum is just a statement of how far the evolution has gone. Some pretty famous thinkers have said in the past that Democracies are short lived, because the minute people realize they can vote themselves a paycheck, then the end is already in sight. We're already evolving, or should I say devolving.
