The public Unions are thriving.
They're thriving because their monopoly on government labor is enshrined into law and sometimes into state constitutions.

If you think about it, even the UAW now is a "public union" thanks to the government bailout of GM and Chrysler. Unlike the unions who worked under Hostess, the UAW knows that government will get their back the next time GM fails.
