Intuitively, most people perpetrating gun crimes are frequent, experienced criminals. They have almost certainly used that gun to threaten or harm others before.

But the victim has been to a course, shoots targets on the range and otherwise leads a non-violent life. So in that split second when the victim is confronted with an armed attacker, they have to react fast enough, keep their cool, draw their weapon and either face down the attacker or decide (and succeed) to shoot him first.

Since there are many failure points in that timeline, I suspect that is partly why so many gun owners end up getting shot themselves. But Ed is right, you would have to know how many of those victims already had criminal records and lived in that environment to begin with.

Boasting that you are carrying a firearm is about as smart as telling people on Facebook that you are going to be gone on vacation. What does it achieve other than self-aggrandizement? Brag to your friends know that you can't be effed with unless you are snuck up on. Like that matters. The people who aren't your friends are now simply on notice to call your bluff or take you by surprise.
