John, re: " the Obama administration has carved out a national political constituency that can win independently of the south, where much of this kind of opposition lies. It's not the strongest of arguments; one need only think of rural areas in PA and Ohio to have some misgivings. But I think it's time to test the strength of the argument."

Sure, but not on the issue of major gun control legislation. You can nibble on the margins but for Obama to raise this as a major issue would be a bridge too far and incredibly foolish. This country would divide up, heat up and burn everyone. And I suspect you'd find many progressive people with guns in their homes who had mixed feelings on gun control.

For people like myself who grew up with guns, they're not that scary. If you've ever been charged by a bear, had a gun pulled on you or spent a lot of time in a country where the guys in uniform and the criminals are the only ones who have access to guns then you might have a different view of the wisdom of the only really effective gun control measure...removing most guns from circulation. I may be a minority on this here in this forum but I wouldn't want to see that. As odds defying as the choice might be, I'd rather risk a friendly fire incident than be unarmed and risk an unfriendly fire one. Ed
