How can it be said that the banks have the best balance in history when the post 2008 GAAP rules do not require the banks to mark to market their assets in their financial reporting? Without that requirement, which existed before 2008, we really don't know how the banks balance sheets are positioned. I believe that if the big banks were required to mark to mark their residential real estate inventory, most would be bankrupt.
