Eric and Al, I have a college friend who posted on his FB page the story of his mastiff and a raccoon. This was sometime last year.

He and his family (wife and 4 kids) was getting into the car to go to grandma's house when their mastiff fought a raccoon in the backyard. The mastiff won and proudly brought the raccoon's carcass to the front door. My friend went over to the carcass only to see that the raccoon was still alive. He went to his car, pulled out a 9mm pistol, then shot the raccoon four times. The raccoon was STILL breathing. A few more bullets and the raccoon was finally put out of its misery.

All this was done in plain sight of the kids. When he went back to the car, his eldest son said, "Daddy, you're a tough dad."

My friend believed that he as a father had a biblical duty to be strong in front of his kids. Personally, I think "strong" in this case means character, not blasting God's creatures with guns, or if you have to, to not do it in front of kids.
