I'm still running and updating XP.

Some of the updates disable Microsoft Security Essentials while they do their update thing then re enable it after the update is completed.

I use ESET NOD 32 antivirus, and when the OS is out of date, as in updates, the icon on the taskbar turns yellow to alert you. Sometimes it turns yellow a day before I get my update(s). This happens on the XP machine and Windows 7.

Even when XP is off support from MS, you can still use the computer, MSSE will still give you updates, you just won't get any other operating system updates from MS.

I bet a pile of people will still be using XP once support ends. It's not the end of the world. I would not have any problems using my XP machine if it's still working when support ends.

Neeka, I use and update XP and a few times lately my MSSE icon indicated I'd lost protection. In MSEE virus and spyware definitions said: up-to-date

I updated MSSE manually anyway and the MSSE icon looked ok again

I wonder if that had anything to do with the Windows update?
Maybe I should have rebooted right after the Windows update?

It was a minor annoyance

You didn't mention what virus protection you're using. I use the free version of Avast and do not have that problem. One of the guys posted this article on "Comprehensive list of free Anti-Virus 2013." You might consider one of them.
