"Japan. They are ahead of us in all of this."

Japan has some similarities to the US, but many large and stark differences.

Japan imports all it's oil, thanks to N. Dakota and elsewhere and new technologies, we're on the way to importing none. Because of Fukishima and reconsidering nuclear power, Japan may soon be importing even MORE energy.

We print the world's reserve currency, Japan does not, which is why they own more of it than any other foreign country other than China.

Japan is intensely xenophobic, and has a worse aging problem than we do. Because of their xenophobia, they are attempting to develop ROBOTS to take care of their seniors!

Japan faces nearby foreign threats from China and N. Korea that we do not. They are currently in a row with China over some worthless rocky islands and considering beefing up their military.

So, Japan is not the predictor of the US's future.

Yet life went on in Japan and apparently has in Iceland as well. We already went though armageddon in my world 2007-09 for those not prepared. Short of nuclear war, crazy drivers or catastrophic weather event I ain't that worried down here in 'paradise' these days..
