Sigh. Know exactly what you mean.

My son's mom's mom was like that. Found out I'm originally from communist Czechoslovakia, and that was that: absolutely certain I'm going straight to hell, soon as I croak. Case closed. Could never, ever have an actual conversation with me. She was scared to death of me, certain I'd pull some devilish trick on her, any second. When she was dying, I held her hand, caressed it, and whispered nice things into her ear. Bet she never dreamt of that.

Ever heard of an army of atheists or agnostics starting wars to make the world go their way, smiting everyone else who believes in deities? Not I.

Fundamentalism is never good. Faith can be overdone (and often is), as in all religions.

What are Islamic jihadists and radicals if not fundamentalists?

I sure am glad I have a forum to discuss such things without delving into the political or religion threads here on SI. Not that I'd ever post in the religion threads. Ugh.

Case in point, this nightmare bozo:

Catholic Priest Piero Corsi Blames 'Filthy Clothes and Cold Food' for Murder of Women

Yeah, sure. Blame the hapless victims. Sheesh. Why don't you blame your precious God, ahole?

They send out emails asking people to pray for their kids before games or tests at school..

And I guess if they didn't win/get high grade, it was because someone didn't pray hard enough.

I think the majority of religious leaders tend to discourage that kind of thinking, at least the more "spiritual" ones, but people are as people are.

So sports are a contest of wills between two sides, who can pray the most.
JOhnny, you didn't get an "A", now go to your room and pray some more so you'll do better next time.

Gish.
