Was your "parent" a crack whore? Were you so poorly nourished your intelligence was affected? Were you physically abused as a child, or neglected? Did you live in an area where you never saw working adults? There are children in our inner cities putatively "raising" children- though I can't say I think that term really applies. There are certainly ways to help the children there, but they aren't the ways that helped you (50 years ago, was it, that you grew up there?)

I'm glad that it worked out for you. As epicure said, though, since socialization is a first step, and without some major motivation to change their socialization ( perhaps including "bribery" and payment), many just can't or won't be educated. Education requires deference to others and respect for ideas that may be alien or take a while to appreciate. It requires delayed gratification. Living in an environment where this is not relevant, such a skill set (your situation notwithstanding) has not been taught or learned on average. Add to that a physical impairment from a pattern of developmental delay and environmental toxins such as lead exposure and you have a mess that is difficult or impossible to untangle. Should we work on it? Yes. Will it be effective? Somewhat. Will it be cheap? No.
