I think our objectives in the war on terror have been all messed up. I think our political objectives for the people we have been fighting for are noble. But they don't, and that is critical. Our tactical objectives and everything else have been messed up. No Counter-insurgency can prevail after 11 years in an environment where, after those 11 years, only a small fraction of the people agree with what you are doing, and their motives are at best --- questionably patriotic. It was appropriate to get out of Iraq when we did. It would have been appropriate to get out of Afghanistan, shortly after we routed the Taliban. That only took 90 days. Our politicians throw around the phrase nation building. That is the big lie. What we really have been doing is nation destroying. And little of the destruction is vital to our national interests.
