Even so anything above $75K is at the margins

The vast majority of Americans are well under $75 and to even suggest that $250 is protecting the middle is bullshit

Mendocino Co is a bit out of the Bay Area, but I broke 75K, or 70K, even, exactly twice. They were the last 2 years I worked, and it took more 60 hour weeks than is healthy for a normal human being.
