<the government doesn't PRODUCE any of this stuff> The government is firefighters, policemen, judges, the garbage man, the person who processes your driver's license, the people who by the tens of thousands get sent to places far from America to serve in our military. Your idea of government is straight from a cartoon playing in your head. The reality is government provides services that we need -- all of us. Having an assault rifle to protect yourself from the local school teacher or the garbage man is insanity.

YM,

Some want to be taken care of, as you know. These people are not the people that went West.

Having assault weapons raises the stakes for all. If the people had few or no guns, the government would feel more emboldened to tread on them, but this would ellicit an early action by the people to change the government through real dialog. What we have now is a failure to communicate - each side is waiting for the other to take real action. I have lived in Europe since the 80's and while the governments seem to limit freedom a lot, the people are much more in the loop and the government officials more wary of their limits than the mightier, smarter Americans.
