but when people start talking as if democracy hinges on the unrestricted right to bear arms, that's when my loon radar starts going off.
Of course it seems far fetched - but history is full of examples. Recent rapid break downs in society like Katrina or LA Riots should give you pause to understand it's possible - but remote. The founding fathers did not create the 2nd amendment to annoy liberals or encourage school shootings.

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
  • This famous statement has produced many paraphrases and variants:
Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
Those who do not remember their past are condemned to repeat their mistakes.
Those who do not read history are doomed to repeat it.
Those who fail to learn from the mistakes of their predecessors are destined to repeat them.
Those who do not know history's mistakes are doomed to repeat them. (Actually this quote is from Sir Edmund Burke 1729-1797)

>> I can buy the arguments of impracticality, but when people start talking as if democracy hinges on the unrestricted right to bear arms, that's when my loon radar starts going off.

A lot of smart people have believed it over the same years, and a lot people who didn't understand it ended up in places no one would want to be.

It is amazing to me how naive you are on this issue.

You should read about about the Russian revolution and the Cultural Revolution in China. The atrocities committed against unarmed populations will make your hair curl.

Bill Ayers wanted to put people of your political persuasion in re-education camps just a few decades ago. He is a college professor now.
