Ted, you are the one who is terribly naive to believe in a free lunch.

Who said anything about a free lunch? Another strawman.

When my kids ask me why they have to work while studying at their university, I tell them, because they have to learn the value of hard work. It's sacrifice and work hard today, so they can enjoy all the good things in life later. The good things in life aren't free. They will need to earn their way in life. No one will give them a free lunch.

Oh hell......the usual American pep talk by the 'responsible' rich parent to their progeny. Big frigging deal. Tell your kids that those of us born to the lower and middle classes don't have a choice in the matter.

However, on this thread at least, it seems that the common wisdom of delayed gratification has fallen away to the crass belief that we can delay consequences forever for our profligacy today, and in the process, damn our future generations to debt slavery and economic stagnation.

No one said anything about gratification......delayed or otherwise. That's the story you tell yourself to justify your current positions but it has little to do with reality or the truth.
