Doug,

If I had all of those answers I would be hell of alot wealthier than I am now. Here is my attempt: While Cabletron probably has the most diverse modular product line with the most enhancements in the industry they also have higher prices. At one point in time this wasn't as much of a consideration. Once Cisco and 3Com decided to join the enterprise hub/switch market in a big way this changed and Cabletron was slow to adapt. They felt that customers would still be willing to pay a little more for products with functionality enhancements. They were wrong! In addition, Cisco is one of the best marketing companies in the industry and outmaneuvered Cabletron, Bay, and 3Com. Does Cisco, 3Com, or Bay make switching products any better than Cabletron? Hell no! Does Cisco have better support than Cabletron? I don't think so! The difference is perception. And if Cabletron wants to regain the perception that they are the best switch/hub company in the world they need to get to story out. I think that Don Reed is a start in the right direction.

IMHO,

Steve
