Rick: Checking the timing distribution for individual stock picks would take a bit of work, but here’s the overall breakdown of when portfolios were submitted:
There were 26 portfolios submitted prior to the 12/31/12, 4PM deadline and 13 portfolios submitted after that time but before the final 1/14/13, 4PM deadline. Of those 13, 5 were submitted on 12/31/12 but after 4PM.
I now agree that it would be best to have a single deadline for all portfolios. But that this deadline should be about 10 days into the New Year, with pricing directly after the deadline. For example, the deadline could be the second Friday of January, at 4PM, with stocks priced at that day’s close.
Thanks for working on improving the Contest rules!
Peace & good health,
Bulba

Early on in December I thought I might like to join you fellows in this contest. I made a list of every biotech of which I had some knowledge and there were 9 of them. 3 were obvious rejects. Thus the only way I could possibly make an entry would be to copy some of you more knowledgeable early posters or to make some effort toward investigating some more companies on my own despite little interest in actually investing in them or following them. I don't even have the knowledge base to understand their business cases.

But I did not regard it as any big deal to copy one of you guys. It would just be pot luck if one of those picks was a winner and more likely would be a drag on my overall results. In fact the probable selection would be based upon what the first letter of it's name was.

But when all this discussion about gaming the rules came up, I rapidly decided I wanted no part of this process again this year. I probably would have decided the same thing anyway before January 14 or whatever the cutoff date was, but that convinced me that I would not be a welcome participant.

I thought Bulba had done a great job of balancing all the possibilities and that it did not matter much even if someone got an edge somehow. With controversy--just not interested.

PS in edit. The main motivator for participating was a suggestion that people who had benefitted by reading this board might feel an obligation to join in and Bulba made it obvious that he desired more participants. That touched me and I wanted to try even though the chances were slim to none of actually winning. Just supporting the rest of you guys is important also because I do get some value out of the discussion.

Not this year since even if I won by blind luck, someone would be unhappy that I had not played by the precise rules they thought applied.
