I know I paid $30 back in 1997 to join and sometime in the past 10 years or so I paid for membership in 5 year increments (edit: Premium Plus, which disappeared during the previous change in ownership) which gave some features that were good for me like batch-message reading, 100 posts at a time, etc. I have never seen advertising on SI these past 16 years. MP
