It's indefensible to me. Yes, if cigarettes are sooo bad, why aren't they banned? Revenue. If alcohol is sooo bad, why isn't it banned? Revenue. With that said, I still expect part of saving the children from guns, will include a new revenue stream for politicians.

Like we have here in Arkansas, a policeman will be writing you a ticket if everyone in the car doesn't have their seat belts on, while you watch some moron flies by on his riceburner without a helmet.

Or gambling in Arkansas. For years, we can't have gambling casinos but we can have gambling at the dog track and the horse track. Well, the politicians finally got on the same page, they agreed to allow the dog track and the horse track to open their own casinos. No one else though!
