I think it didn't work because people don't like paying dues for social media sites and hate ads.

Offering "lifetime" memberships for $75, or free, and with a promise of no ads, is part of what the Dryers paid and committed to, to build what they sold. And that's what subsequent buyers bought.

The current or the next owner could leave SI alone and learn from it, enough to set up a 2014 social network site or whatever he deems worth extracting from the IP he bought or brings to the venture or acquires to add to it. If he treats SI members right, they and others who hear about how he runs the venture, might be inclined (or induced) to join the next venture. But the audience for that next venture will not be limited to the SI membership.

It is easy to see SI as not the promise of the venture, but a springboard to something he could hold long-term or sell in 3-5 years for $10 million.
