Apple's bigger worry should be young people who are increasingly trying out android phones because they are bigger and media-related reasons. iPhones need to be cooler - not cheaper.

"Why would Apple want to move that far down market, gaining minimal net profit, cannabilizing to some degree sale of higher priced, higher ASP phones all the while incurring support costs of customers who are unlikely to buy additional services but use considerable support resources."

It depends if they want to defend market share. There are strategic reasons to do so beyond maximizing short-term profit.

But if anything, Apple has proven with the Mac that it is possible to thrive with 5% market share by picking off the most profitable customers.
