To have further meaningful number-based discussion, we'd have to define times, areas, comps, etc. and the outcome would be bragging rights at best. So yeah, let's drop it. :)

Forgive me for intruding, but I have a pet theory about Bay Area real estate:

There is a "financial convection" process going on in the Bay Area. As certain companies have done (really) well with respect to their stock appreciation, those employees with stock options cash out and move into the center from the outlying areas to be closer to work, or move up to (relatively) nicer homes. As people retire, they move out of the area, and often to other states with a lower cost of living. This is what has kept the housing costs relatively high the area.

Personally, the 1980s were also a period of relatively high-cost real estate.
