I think the skill set is key as well...and not just for living off the land, but having skills that will be in demand.

I disagree with the speaker that the US will be 'ground zero' of the crisis, i think the US is actually in relatively good shape, altho it will not be easy in the US, either...hopefully we muddle thru, and good to have a garden as a supplement to what one might need, but strong skills and career positioning would be more important imo.

I would not want to be on an isolated farm, waiting for the crisis, which could take quite a few years to materialize, and maybe never happen,and in the meantime one has squandered one's career opportunities and burned up ones savings...all while living in fear...
