Subscriber numbers now are secondary for AOL's outlook.

What matters is keeping subs in ad space controlled by AOL.
As AOL is forced to become more web=centric and as services
on the web have improved -- including with promotion by big
name media companies in their TV and print ads -- keeping subs
in AOL-controlled space becomes increasingly difficult;
compounded by word-of-mouth about web sites AND increasing
sophistication and adventure of AOL subs.

AOL does its best to keep newbies so forever -- sort of like
pill time in One Flew Over The Cukoo's Nest. But over time
that's a loosing battle.
