The barrels are ported (holes drilled into them) to reduce felt recoil and keep the muzzle from rising so you can make your next shot quickly by keeping you on target.

The trouble with the photo (or photoshopped image) is the smoke is only coming out the right side port. The ports are symmetrical and on both sides of the barrels. So there should be two streams of smoke rising from the left and right sides of the upper barrel.
