Brumar, Rhee makes a very powerful point about trying to serve the system vs. trying to serve kids.

How long would it take to fix the system? How long HAS it taken? No parent in underperforming school districts can afford to wait. Kids have a nasty habit of growing up on you.

Vouchers aren't the ideal solution, but they do help kids that need it the most, and they help now.

Democrats, especially teacher's unions, don't like to hear anything that goes against their collectivism, but that's how beholden they are to their ideology.

This woman exemplifies excellence in education -- and they ran her out of DC on a rail.

It is something, these days, to find a person -- particularly a life-long Democrat -- who is has life long roots in the party and can actually stand up and say, "We're wrong about this."

We really need more like her in this country. She understands that we ought to be delivering first rate educations for the money we're spending and I think she knows what needs to be done to make it happen.

She ought to be the Education Secretary today and it is all but certain she will be one day.

I keep hearing how great the schools "used to be" and that's true.

The schools were better 40 years ago because many of the best and brightest women went into teaching. They didn't have a lot of other choices.

Around the mid-70's when everything started opening up for women they could go into whatever field they wanted to. Teaching was no longer at the top of the list.

I'm not sure, but I believe that's around the same time that the Unions started making major inroads into the profession. Unions are for equality, not competence.

Whether you have public schools or charter schools you need to have competent people and objective standards.
