BUT in 2012, the U.S. government spent more on the Homeland Security agencies responsible for border security than all of its other principal federal law enforcement agencies combined. The $18 billion allocated to Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement significantly exceeds the $14.4 billion that makes up the combined budgets of the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Secret Service, the U.S. Marshal Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. So when you say as opposed to real problems facing the country, I have to wonder why having a hundred mile wide border zone trumps drugs, kidnapping, organized crime, environmental protection, etc. (2) Much of the provisions in the Patriot Act had sunset clauses in them. Obama did not have to negotiate to have them repealed, he just could have opted not make them permanent. (3) Negotiating to uphold the constitution is not a burden, but a duty. (4) Negotiating to uphold the constitution is not a political hot potato. It is a very marketable proposition. So not Obama would not have to use political capital, he could have actually gained a few points if he was so inclined. I find the big prejudice common amongst the people who should know better very disturbing. People on both the so called right and left first look at which party is in charge before deciding how to judge the government, as if a wrong done by your favorite party is somehow less wrong.
