"Every year I see a new class of smart kids, motivated kids, who are just ignorant," said Gelernter."

That's wingerspeak for "These kids just refuse to accept the bullshit I try to lay on them. They are smarter than I am."

I had long thought that the arguments between people like you and I stemmed from differing economic visions.

Recently a psychology prof shed new light from another perspective. Jonathan Haidt at NYU conducted extensive interviews and distributed questionnaires to a lot of people all across the political spectrum. He extensively analyzed the data and came to some illuminating conclusions, published in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND -- (I understand he was a liberal, but has begun recovery).

He found that “liberals” are motivated by the “care” factor. They are convinced their moral intuitions can be politically exercised toward achieving certain goals and are largely immune to even examining the rock solid evidence contravening their cherished illusions. In the extreme (you) it would seem to me this defect distills to psychosis.

At the other end he concluded that libertarians tend to amass knowledge, then use analytic tools to reach their conclusions. They understand the processes that lead to fulfillment of your desires.

If you could clear your receptors and do some serious study you might learn why those in the know so fear and loathe the mentality mislabeled as progressive or liberal. That disease constitutes a threat to my children, and theirs, and theirs. And yours.

It’s interesting you should call me a right wing greedy fascist pig (well, I am right wing, a pig maybe). So many of your positions are joined at the hip with those of Benito and Adolph, and no one has ever explained the similarities to you.

The ills affecting America largely stem from deluded nincompoops that so infest our academia. In the soft subjects they churn out people with no exposure to the lessons of history. Words don’t kill, but bad ideas lead to lousy results and sometimes slaughter.

I’m done intruding here. If you feel the need to further impugn my character or assail my intelligence I suggest a PM.

I'm coming to this late, so if I respond off-topic from it, forgive and/or correct me. i don't know the history of the exchange.

However, when it comes to healthcare, that can often be given the pffft by many. Even many supporters of it often don't grasp the simple consequences.

But to put it in simple monetary and personal experience terms: I'm 54 with a family history of skin cancer, as well as all those burns when young in West Texas and California in the 60's and 70's, ah, such innocent days. anyways, I had a few dollars saved and decided it was past time for another skin check. turns out I have melanoma. It's early and all that has to happen is to cut a few more layers of flesh out. The appt was 100, then 3 freezes for other spots and the cut&biopsy was 278. It will be 370 to take out the extra. What if I'd waited another year? What if I had kids that needed feeding so I neglected going, knowing it'd be at least 100? (the cost of the check up w/ no spots dealt with) Those are things that make me crazy in terms of the lack of health care. Why should anyone die because of a melanoma that if removed is no big deal but if neglected means death?

For me, the money spent means no trip to CA to visit family yet and/or no new paint in the trailer. for others? It's rent. Or food for their children. And though I don't have children, no one should not have them just because of lack of health care.

Missed part of my point! I wanted to say that for 670 dollars I will live. Otherwise, I'd be on the death watchlist. It can be easy for people on SI, at least majority, to scoff at that amount. But for me, it means sacrifices. No trip. No paint. I won't get that push lawn mower until the grass is tall (but I will get it!). I don't say "me" to whine, but to point out that a person who has enough to get by month to month, and far more simply than most (no kids, paid for truck, etc), laying out 670 is a big deal. for many, it's the difference between keeping the power on etc.
