There's certainly some truth to it. But one of the things that it ignores is that this constant flow of data is primarily noise. Our brains are being filled with massive amounts of meaningless data or even worse, incorrect data. And we are becoming less and less able to process the information and figure out what is meaningful and what is not.

I can foresee dystopic scenarios akin to the movies Videodrome and Johnny Mnemonic where the information (as either data or video) causes real physical conditions and certainly mental and emotional. Johnny Mnemonic was written by Cyberpunk genius author William Gibson. If you are not familiar with Gibson, run, don't walk...er, click to Amazon to buy the books Neuromancer, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive.

I see too many people living their lives online rather than using technology as a tool. I don't believe it is healthy. And yes, I realize that at one time, I was on the cutting edge of living too much of my life online. But compared to the young people of today with twitter, instagram and facebook, I was truly a piker.

How often do we see people choosing to communicate via text of cellphone when they have a warm body right in front of them waiting to communicate. Electronic communications trump direct human interaction. Again, i am just as guilty as anyone.

I predict that the pendulum will swing to a place where the constant flow of information is better filtered and used more as a tool than an external organ.

When you get right down to it, we are still organic lifeforms. We still need to eat, poop and sleep. Biology is going to win in the long run.

re: The web will be history.

I believe the web will be history because it is recording history as we type or speak .....from the mundane to flashes of real insight, it is all recorded.

I study history, and particularly American history, searching for letters and diaries of people who have passed on....what did they actually think about their own situation in history? How does what they did or didn't do matter to us? In a way, it's that old physics thing....if someone didn't push on the string, did time bend or sis it just stay steady?

I also think this is true....
