This is the one everybody fills out at the dealer's store for a NICS background check:atf.gov This is not called gun registration and you need to understand that. "The dealer also records all information from the Form 4473 into their "bound-book". A dealer must keep this on file at least 20 years and is required to surrender the log to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) upon retirement from the firearms business. The ATF is allowed to inspect, as well as request a copy of the Form 4473 from the dealer during the course of a criminal investigation. In addition, the sale of two or more handguns to a person in a five-day period must be reported to ATF on Form 3310.4 ." en.wikipedia.org Simple translation: Purely a background check on me and no detailed information of the transaction is collected by the govt. This process is done by the dealer over the phone with him giving my name, SS#, DL# and typically takes 3 to 5 minutes. Personally, I would not mind in the least if I had to meet a private buyer at a FFL dealer in order to make a sale. I would not even mind if I had to go through a second NICS check myself, since the buyer will be paying the fees, typically $20-$50. Whether or not other gun owners agree with me on background checks for private sales, I can assure you we all agree on the issue of "Registration". As it is, the govt has no idea how many guns I have or when I sell them. Nor is any useful purpose served by changing that other than the specter of confiscation. You seem hell-bent on effecting some kind of change, so I would advise you to choose your arguments and battles wisely. Start with the ones easiest to win. SS
