I think that your points are sound but, as may have been mentioned before, if a multinational is facing slowing demand for its mfg capacity because of increased foreign competition, as well as increasing issues whether it wants to be in mfg anyway, won't that likely accelerate the trend toward outsourcing - it gets rid of mfg, instead of just idling or reducing shifts at its plants. I could readily see this happening but would expect it to have an uneven effect throughout the industry.
