Great expectations: A tale of USB zdnet.com

This is moderately off topic. USB has been floating around for years now, and is generally considered a good thing technically. So what's the hangup? Wouldn't you guess.

A USB speaker system can therefore be a cost-effective combination of the electronic and mechanical systems that turn sound files into training, communication or entertainment.

But all of this assumes that the underlying operating system is ready. Think again. Our Aztech demo was marred by many crashes of the Windows 98 beta that the company was using in its booth. USB on Windows 95 is not widespread, and Windows 98 leads early betting for "lowest-impact product at Comdex/Fall 1998."

Windows NT 5.0 is hot on Win 98's heels, with my colleague Timothy Dyck predicting that Microsoft will fill a gaping hole in its revenue stream by releasing NT 4.5 next year.

The worst of times, indeed.

Cheers, Dan.

Thanks for the article. I like this part and I feel the same way.

"There is that inherent confidence in all employees of this company. So whether there's a market setback, a legal setback or a technology setback or a customer setback, this company has great resiliency, great energy and great optimism and I think there is a collective force among all of our employees that we will find ways to overcome, in a positive sense."

Dan, you've highlighted Microsoft activism in pushing copyright/antipiracy legislation several times. I don't understand what the point is--the entire software industry is together with Microsoft (cool, they all actually agree on something!) on this, and everyone is benefitting. Microsoft has been among the most vocal, but it's the entire software industry that has made the push.

>Plus, I think the "OS/Browser" integration thing is just plain bad software design>

Dan, can't disagree with the technical aspects--but I don't think they're the big issue. Many users like the idea of OS/Browser integration (afterall, it's all about customers), and atleast [finally! for the first time, ever!] Microsoft did something "innovative" with the integration thing. Personally, I much prefer to run IE4/Windows than plain Windows.
