Don't hairdressers, lawyers, chiropractors, plumbers, nutritionists, etc., practice without supervision? What's different about NP's?

I suggest that the answer is only that this is new. From my work experience, it's natural to put all sorts of affirmative controls on something due primarily to the novelty and concerns about how it might play out.

Edit: Anyone in any licensed practice performs according to professional standards subject to loss of license, lawsuit, criminal charges, loss of reputation, etc., which is not the same as supervision. I can't envision why this would instead require supervisory controls.

Just asking...
