Pat, I'm embarassed to say I wasn't aware of that. That's definitely an interesting angle.

I'm not a big 3Com fan and haven't been since their CEO made some very bullish comments last winter about so-called "strength in the pipeline" right before they blew-up back then, so if TI and Siemens are ready to challenge them if/when ADSL reaches critical mass - great.

Good trading,

Tom

<..But 56K appears to be in trouble due to the standard's battle>

No doubt 56K has suffered, and is a large reason why COMS is hurting (and independant of losing *future* business, this slowdown will likely have an effect on TXN as well, as inventory clogs ALL channels)

But considering that GTE, AT&T (Worldnet), Uunet, MCI and BellSouth have all announced 56K support in the last week or two, as well as:

"...A number of factors should have slowed market acceptance of 56K modems: performance figures 40 to 75 percent lower than their namesake transmission rate, competing and incompatible standards, and unstable modem drivers. Instead, 56K sales are climbing. At least one hundred 56K modems have made their debut in the past six months and, despite x2's head start, sales of competing K56flex-equipped units are keeping pace...>

from techweb.com

seem to argue that 56K is not exactly dead.

<..and DSL is breathing down its neck..>

MANY recent articles, including the above (which adds to a long list of articles favoring cable modems) would view ADSL more as making faint stirring noises from a deep slumber..

<..so if COMS (b/c of USR)is going with ADI in order to gain an advantage (threat) over TI, it might be a ploy in a larger battle...>

And with the technology for their single chip A&D DSP solution, this COMS/ADI "ploy" may well be a very effective one.
