OK, you have a point .... the white ancestry of US blacks could have come from anyone, but an awful lot of it would have come from slave owners or a member of the slave owner's family. As for white ancestors with slave owning ancestors, anyone whose ancestors came to the US after the slave era wouldn't have them. For people descended from ancestors here in the colonial era, it would be hard to prove whether there were any slave owners because of the high number of ancestors in colonial America. OTOH, even though there were slaves in all the colonies, I believe the rate of slave ownership was low .. that is, that it was mostly well-off people who would have been able to afford slaves.
