This is pure speculation, of course, but perhaps the rumor could have been planted today to further bulster a 40 dollar buyout figure. If ASND is at 22 -- 40 seems ridiculous, but at 28 it's more reasonable.

It's interesting how everyone has accepted as gospel that Ascend did indeed reject a $35 bid. If you just take a price today, $25, and go to $35, that's a 40% premium over market. What makes any of you think any suitor is going to pay more than 40%?

If I found out that the CEO of a company whose stock I owned turned down a 40% premium, I would be plenty angry at such a stupid greedy CEO. After all, 40% in the pocket is far better than 13% on a rumor.
