Look at it from their point of view. Reagan is the only conservative, Republican president that was anything more than mediocre. Not that he was great, but at least he wasn't a failure and/or an embarrassment. The only decent to great Republican presidents were all very liberal, up to and including Lincoln who would be aghast at the Republican party today.
