It's *always* an exciting time to be alive, for me at least. I have a very close friend for whom it is not, and that simply is terrible. Not financial related at all... severe depression for more than a year. There are actually much worse things that a financial depression. John Steinbeck wrote a great essay about living through the Depression, called A Primer on the 30's, although I think it's one thing to come of age during the depression, and another to be thrust into it. When my mom was a kid, her father owned a shipping company in Portland, Oregon, which has groundbreaking and vital trade with Japan. Needless to say, WWII destroyed them financially.
