Did Bartaromo say something that in some way verified it or that indicated some veracity? I wish I could have seen her item, but I missed it. Gary, I have Maria's story on tape; It's 3a.m. in NY, but I'll do my best. It was an unscheduled appearance marked News Flash. She said, "Well today folks Ascend Communications ended up 3 1/4 to 26 7/8 on very heavy volume amid wide spread speculation on Wall Street that the company will be taken over by either Lucent or Northern Telecom. I've learned that there's more to this story than mere rumor. Sources believe that over the past few weeks Lucent Technologies did make a $35 per share offer for Ascend. But the sources said that offer was turned down by Ascend because the company is holding out for $40 a share. Now one good source tells me ASND expects Lucent to come back with a $40 per share offer. Earlier this year, Ascend acquired Cascade Communations and this is apparently the crown jewel that Lucent wants..." Hope this helps, and congratulations on your takeover call. Tim

I'm just pleased that ASND has gotten some positive exposure for once in a long while! I'd like to be really confident that the takeover bids are for real, but Ashby does seem to be saying a few too many small comments that put that in an unlikely light. I hope this is just company policy, but who knows. I'm not going to get my hopes up! I'll be happy with ASND trending back up on its own merits over the next few months as well. Style Pts.
