Fuchi, I don't know if this was posted:realworldtech.com The AMD K6 Boxed processors are now shipping. The price will range from $30.00 to $50.00 more than the tray versions until the availability improves. One AMD rep informed me that they intend to allocate a quantity to the boxed program before the OEMs get ahold of them so that there will always be at least some availability. This is very good news, since Intel took about a year to figure out how to ensure there was enough product available and even now has some difficulties with the more popular processors on occassion. We also learned that the K6-266 should be shipping by mid-December and the K6-300 will be ready around April or May of '98 It appears that Cyrix has recalled all of the 2x75MHz parts from their distrbutors and are now shipping *only* the 2.5x66MHx parts!! We would have to assume from this that IBM/Cyrix have finally nailed down their manufacturing process for these parts, and their yields have improved significantly. We also have heard that Cyrix is planning to release a 2x83MHz PR233 part very soon. We have it on very good authority that IBM engineers have been 'scouring' the planet for boards that officially support 83MHz - and that the SiS5591 chipset is getting a lot of their attention. In fact, it seems that right now they are leaning very heavily towards the Gigabyte motherboards - in particular the GA586SG. You should be hearing more about that board soon. In related news, the PR266 should be available sometime in early '98 ABIT announced a couple of new motherboards sporting 100MHZ bus speeds at COMDEX this week. One is based upon the VIA VP3 chipset, while the other is using the ALi Alladin chipset. Unfortunately, as far as we know the 100MHZ speed is still not supported officially by either of these chipset manufacturers, and will not be officially supported by the Socket 7 processors until Cyrix announces their PR266 part running at that speed (maybe not even until the PR300). M Tech has stopped manufacturing the R534 motherboards, and in fact the 'F' model is nowhere to be found!! There are only about 2000 of the 'G' model left in the market, after which there will be literally no availability. The R534 is being replaced by the R548, which uses the newer SiS5591 chipset, but unfortunately this board is not yet ready for prime time. Perhaps we will see this board become available in the next few weeks. The R548 will have 4 ISA/4 PCI slots with no option for the 3 PCI/5 ISA that the R534 had. Wider availability of 166 MHz part is good news. It will be easier to overclock it to 188 MHz than the 150 MHz part. I just got a 150 MHz MX PR200 last week. It runs at 188 MHz, but it is not rock solid at that speed. I am down to 2.5x66. Joe
