Yeah, they want victims, but they especially want victims with something worth stealing. You talk as if having a gun somehow makes you impervious to attack. Now, if he just had a gun in his home and they knew that, then that would make it less likely that they would try and break into his home. As I've said before I myself DO have a gun in my home. This old guy carrying a gun on the street makes it more likely that someone will shoot him or he will shoot somebody else.
