Yes, it is true that they charge $15.00 for phone support incidents which are not related to an Iomega product fault. I think that's a reasonable price for good help, and it really encourages people to 1) read the manual, and 2) use the online sources for help.
=========

Here's a for instance of a company I like to deal with and whose products I'm happy to buy. Last week I had a problem with very slow restores and when I called Imation this AM they were nice enough to take the time to look into it and offer some explanations. Toll free, no hassles, no defensive attitude about why I called. No credit card number. No finger pointing ("well, you know, almost nothing is ever our fault"), just quick help in resolving the problem.

Read the manual? All two 11"x14" pages? They print on both sides, you know - it might take a week.

I haven't found any online sources for help on things are not very clear, when judgement and experience and a little thinking are needed. Canned replies don't often fix things other than the simplest problems.

Except that the Iomega "manual" is a misnomer at best. It barely contains enough info and direction to get started, let alone resoplve any problems. Very unsatisfactory for someone with l0imited expertise I think.

Re: Iomega tech support policies.

I recently purchased a Zip drive and could not hook it up to my parallel
port with my HP printer attached as the instruction manual indicated. After checking with on line support and Fax service I was told to dial the $15.00 service line. To make a long story short, the service rep knew instantly that the problem was incompatability with my print drivers. He instructed me how to set up the print drivers to resolve the problem. He charged me $15.00 dispite my strong protests. Like I was suppose to know that with certain settings the print drivers will conflict with the Zip software, dispite no mention of this in the documentation or online contacts. Talk about bandits thats the last Iomega product I will ever purchase.
